Custom single turbo mustang build
« on: September 14, 2009, 03:21:41 PM »

This is a project I did awhile back. I wanted a hot rod to run around town in but didnt want to sink a ton in it. It had to be different, even though it was a mustang. Grin So this is what I came up with.

The car was in pretty bad shape when I got it. Busted windsheild, mirror, and some bad body panels. The car was a '88 4 cylinder mustang. The first thing I did was sell the engine and trans to help pay for the car. I switched the 7.5 rear for a 8.8 I got from a wrecked doner car. Some wheels, a little paint from a can, and a buffer cleaned it up some.

I wanted something different, and I am cheap  Grin so I designed and built my own intake using the lower section off a ford truck. Some card board helped me get the look I wanted and work out some of the design issues.

Yea I knew I wanted to go with a box upper, just because they work well with boosted setup. I also felt this type of intake would be the easiest, and cheapest to build. I think I had maybe $30 in the sheet metal, and the truck lower was give to me.

Here is how the custom turbo setup came together. I didnt want to give up alot of the things that make cars reliable so you will notice I made the kit to work with the stock fan and water pump.

Thanks...
I had fun with it.
Went 7.0 in the 1/8 before I sold it.

Yes...
When I decided to do a turbo car, I wanted to keep it on a budget. One way to keep the cost down was too build my own intake, and I had some steel plate for the base and some sheet metal laying around. I think I might of had $35 in the whole deal.

Very well...
For the money I figured I would give it a shot.

Controls boost very well, and has had no issues. I am guessing it doesnt get no where as hot as a race setup would though.
I have also bought knock off Tial 38's and what I have found is that all the Tial parts will work on the cheap stuff.
I have used Tial springs, and seats.

I am getting ready to do another simular setup, and plan to use the same type units.
